The WAVE Team students have been heard loud and clear. They recently spoke to the councillors of the Mackenzie District Council to encourage them to make the district’s playgrounds “smokefree”. The councillors voted unanimously in favour of the students’ proposal at their meeting this week.
This has been a huge learning experience for these students in how any member of the community can made a submission, speak personally on behalf of that submission and make a difference in their community.
Thank you to the District Council for supporting their submission, to the community for getting behind the students and signing their petition and to the students themselves for all their hard work.
In the near future, smokefree signs will appear in all the District’s playgrounds and we encourage the community to demonstrate voluntary compliance to ensure that these areas remain a clean and healthy environment for young people and their caregivers.
